‘Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone’ – if you studied W.H. Auden for the Leaving Cert, or have seen Four Wedding and a Funeral numerous times, you’ll know the words well. In this programme, we look at how the works of the 20th century poet still resonate today. Adam Low, who previously profiled Auden 30 years ago in his documentary The Auden Landscape, directs while contributors include Four Weddings director himself Richard Curtis, as well as Alan Bennett, Polly Clark, Alexander McCall Smith, James Fenton and Paul Muldoon. Aside from ‘Funeral Blues’, the programme also looks at how Auden’s poem ‘September 1, 1939’ found new life after 9/11.
