The third episode of this four-part series, War, tells the story of how in August 2008, Russia went to war with America's ally, Georgia. The programme charts the intense behind-the-scenes negotiations that led up to the conflict, notably the summit in Bucharest where President Bush’s efforts to get Georgia into NATO came up against the opposition of France and Germany, determined not to provoke Russia. When the shooting starts, French President Nicholas Sarkozy brokers a ceasefire. Meanwhile, in Washington, US officials, including Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, and Condoleezza Rice, describe what happened inside the National Security Council as they debated whether to give Georgia military support - in effect whether to go to war with Russia.
