Bill O'Herlihy - who's had one wild summer of sport, it just might be enough to make him retire - presents live coverage of the ceremony from London, with George Hamilton at the Olympic Park. It begins with what promises to be a spectacular show produced by Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle, starring a cast of 10,000 volunteers and telling the story of a land recovering from its industrial legacy. Team Ireland will appear, as sportsmen and women from the 204 competing countries march into the stadium for the athletes' parade. If you want more coverage, countdown to the opening ceremony kicks off at 7.00pm at BBC1.
