Traditionally, we Irish spend more money celebrating Christmas than any of our EU neighbours. The average Irish household will spend at least €1,400 over the festive season - twice the EU average, we will consume over 6,000 calories, create 180,000 tonnes of waste and most of us will wake up in January in debt. This year will be different for the McArdles in Stepaside and the O'Connor's in Longford. With Conor and Ella's help both families try to reduce their spending on everything: food, presents, entertainment and decorations by at least 50% but without taking the magic and joy out of Christmas.
