This six-part documentary series scrutinises the inner workings and the demanding daily realities of the NHS’s services. If you invested in RTE series Keeping Ireland Alive: The Health Service in a Day last autumn, this series is produced in a similar vein, being edited and broadcast within weeks of filming. In this first episode of the series, two life-saving procedures are carried out on patients in St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. 67-year-old Simon requires a cancerous tumour to be removed from his oesophagus, while Janice (78) needs surgery for a ruptured aneurysm. Both require a bed in the ICU but the hospital is full to capacity and only one bed is available.
