In this one-off special, Alice Roberts explores the latest discoveries in the study of human origins. Recent studies in the field of paleo-anthropology have identified four other distinct species of human which co-existed with Homo sapiens 50,000 years ago. Paleo-anthropology, or the study of fossils, has advanced much thanks to genetics, as advanced genome sequencing techniques have led to the extraction of well-preserved DNA samples from ancient bones. In the documentary feature, we also discover that our ancestors met and interacted with other humans in ways that are still relevant today. Alice uses this information to update the human family.
