As tomorrow is National Autism Day, this programme will look at the life and studies of developmental psychologist Uta Frit, who has transformed understanding of the condition. The professor discusses the ways people with autism perceive and interact with the world, reveals how another kind of reality exists for them and explains why they often fail to understand jokes. Her studies stemmed from when she began her training in the 1960's and met a group of bright young children who seemed completely detached from the world. They'd been diagnosed as autistic but Frit made it her business to find out all she could about these children and ultimately dedicating her career to studying the autistic mind.
