An intimate, epic picture of the migration crisis, Exodus: Our Journey to Europe records and was recorded by people who actually smuggled themselves into Europe.

The refugee subjects are running from war, poverty and persecution in a desperate bid to make a new life for themselves in Europe.

The first episode of the series airs tonight and sees thousands of refugees from Syria arrive in the Turkish port of Izmir. We are introduced to a black market cigarette seller named Isra’a, who is only eleven, and her father Tarek, who is considering smuggling his family across the Mediterranean by dinghy.

We also meet 27 year old Hassan, who is fleeing from imprisonment and torture in his native Damascus via dinghy, and 24 year old Anas, whose taxi is fired at as he leaves for the Turkish border.
