As Ireland prepares to head to Euro 2016, this first of two programmes looks back on Ireland's first ever European Championships appearance back in 1988. Euro ’88: We Can Beat This Lot recalls the excitement of Irish fans as we took part in the tournament in West Germany, led by inspirational new manager Jack Charlton. A Ray Houghton goal saw us beat England in Stuttgart and then a draw with the Soviet Union gave us a real chance of making it into the knockout stages. Despite being knocked out by eventual winners the Netherlands, the team were still given a champions’ welcome upon their return home.
