The origin story for what has become one of the best franchises in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Scrawny Steve Rodgers (Chris Evans with the help of some CGI) is considered ineligible for service in World War II. However, a scientist (Stanley Tucci) thinks he might be the perfect guinea pig to test a 'Super Soldier' serum to give the Allies an edge in the war. Rodgers comes out the other side as Captain America. Dropped into the war, hoping to see combat, he's instead treated as a side show to boost morale amongst the troops. He has to convince Colonel Chester Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones) and love interest Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) that he's their best weapon against the villainous Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) and the sinister Hydra. The First Avenger is the weakest of the Captain America movies but that's more to do with the strength of its predecessors rather than its own shortcomings. Its World War II backdrop sets it apart from anything else in the Marvel Universe and it also arguably boasts the best villain we've seen in any Marvel movie to date.
