This one-off documentary explores the world’s most famous doll and one of its most popular toys: Barbie. Mary Portas explores Barbie’s iconic status and asks what comes next for the doll in an increasingly gender-neutral world. An American businesswoman named Ruth Handler created the doll in 1959 and Mary Portas starts at the California HQ of manufacturers Mattel to learn of Barbie’s origins. Along her journey, Mary meets experts, collectors and fans young and old as well as a real-life version of Barbie’s fella Ken. She also explores the issues associated with the doll such as negative body image and a lack of job aspiration in young girls.
