As period dramas go, Atonement has to be nigh on the best, most certainly in recent years, and it features stomper performances from its leads Keira Knightley, James McAvoy and our own Saoirse Ronan, who was just thirteen at the time. Set in 1935, ahead of World War II, it tells the tale of a burgeoning relationship between the daughter of a wealthy family and the son of their housekeeper, which is horrendously interrupted when her little sister accuses him falsely of assault, unaware of the tragic and lifelong repercussions her actions will have.
