Be prepared for your productivity to go through the floor and/or to get fired thanks to that friend who always sends inappropriate messages, because Whatsapp is on desktops now.
You won't have to surreptitiously slide your hand under the desk with your phone to tap out a secret message during the day anymore, you can now get access to Whatsapp on your desktop or laptop computer, via a web-based client.
By logging on to the newly active Whatsapp Web site, you can hook up your phone and the browser you're using so that you can send messages to your mates and still make the noise of typing furiously, giving the impression that you're doing some work, at least.
To get the service to work, you simply log on to the website, scan the QR code on your phone and you're ready to go. The client will sync up your messages, but you need to make sure that your phone is also online at the same time, and that you have the latest version of Whatsapp installed.
Speaking to The Verge, a representative for Whatsapp said that this is merely an extension of the popular messaging program, but that this would hopefully be helpful to a lot of people: "The primary use is of course still on your phone, but there are people who spend time in front of a computer at home or at work and this will help bridge the two". Speaking on their blog about the move, the company said "we really hope you find web client useful in your everyday lives", and we know we certainly will, so don't be expecting too many articles today folks.
The service is not available for iOS at the moment, although they have stated that is on the horizon, but the timeframe is unclear as of yet due to platform limitations.
