There's no better way to promote a TV mini-series about the Great Depression than by sporting a clingy dress with your entire left side hanging out. Actually, why not stick spots on it too? Go crazy.

Nope, it's not an illusion, her arm's not covering flesh coloured knicker elastic - Kate's not wearing any underwear - unless that dress has a hidden gusset. See, she even has to strain to keep director Todd Hayes' (I'm Not There) hands from going for an ole wander.

Kate wasn't the only person trussed up in a perplexing dark number. Melissa Leo, we could do without knowing you aren't in possession of a plunge bra but do have a tattoo on your left breast. What is Mariska Hargitay up to? Who knew black had so many levels? Clean lines, Mariska, clean lines. Keeping with the 'leather jacket avec something kind of dodgy' theme, behold Teresa Moore and Ruthie Davis. And the ode to the early 90s continued with offerings from Kasia Pilewicz, Cataline Moreno, Nanette Lepore (at this point I feel compelled to say you shouldn't recognise all the names, just go with it), and Halley Feiffer. Ireland tried but is essentially in tatters. Gretchen Mol attempted to lighten the mood with natural legs and a Newgrange meets Babylon 5 hybrid... it's safe to say Evan Rachel Wood was the only person attending exhibiting a bit of class.

Here's the area where I keep the informative titbits: As the backdrop is successfully communicating, it's a new HBO mini-series called Mildred Pierce, which is based "on James M Cain's 1941 novel." It's set in the Great Depression and focuses on a "divorced single mum who decides to open a new restaurant and ends up falling in love." Not your usual HBO fare, despite Steve Buscemi being among the guests. Kate, of course, plays the lead, I'm guessing Guy Pearce is the love interested, and Evan Rachel Wood plays Kate's daughter. Hence the dress choice at the premiere. It's all so transparent now.
