Sure, it can add a nice flavour and help to preserve stuff, but it has plenty more applications that can do almost anything. Dirty iron? Spilled egg? FIRE? No need to call the fire fighters or egg cleaner-uppers, instead call salt.
Quick side note, if you do have a fire, obviously call the relevant authorities, don't depend on salt. It can be a bit...flaky.
