A would-be criminal in Drogheda appears to have been foiled by the very instrument he planned to use to commit the crime.
Gerry Brady, owner of the Pheasant pub in Drogheda, got a bit of a surprise recently when he went to his car after closing up only to find a man in a pool of his own blood next to the vehicle. His first thought was to attend to the man, that he presumed had been beaten up.
Things got even weirder from there, however, as Brady told Independent.ie, as rather than accepting the help that he was offering, the suspected robber began to threaten him: "He pulled himself up and said he wanted €50 for a taxi. I said 'Not a chance, I've to pay for a new window mate', that's when he leaned in and told me he'd burn me out of the pub."
He also threatened to tell the Gardaí that he had been assaulted by Brady, who then decided to put some distance between himself and the robber by calling the police from a nearby petrol station.
The Gards responded quickly to the situation, and when they picked him up, he started to claim the the pub owner was the one who attacked him. That is, until Brady showed up with the CCTV footage of what actually happened.
The clip got a good reception in the Garda station, according to Brady, who said "you should have heard the garda laughing when they saw the video. They were in stitches". It's also a pretty decent ad for Mercedes Benz too; 'the car that knocks out criminals'. We want a slice of the action if that becomes the new marketing campaign, by the way.
