NASA has begun the process of recruiting new astronauts to 'blaze the trail' to Mars.

It could be even trickier than the getting into Templemore though. The last time NASA was recruiting (2013), only eight astronauts were chosen from among 6,000 applicants.

Those odds aren't so bad you might be saying to yourself and to be fair they're not but to even have your application considered you need to have the following:

1. Have a third level degree (Post Graduate preferable)

2.  Have near visual acuity

3. have three years of related work experience (or else have at least 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time in a jet aircraft)

So pretty straightforward right? Oh and you also will have to undergo a gruelling long-duration physical too. The Simpsons might have made it seem like a walk in the park but space travel can be quite demanding.

In a statement made on their website, NASA administrator Charles Bolden said :

"NASA is on an ambitious journey to Mars and we’re looking for talented men and women from diverse backgrounds and every walk of life to help get us there. This group will launch to space from U.S. soil on American-made spacecraft and blaze the trail on our journey to the Red Planet."

Travelling to Mars. Yeah cause that worked out so well for this guy:

There'll be stiff competition for places but don't rule yourself out without hearing what NASA's director of flight operations at NASA’s Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Brian Kelly, has to say:

"Some people would be surprised to learn they might have what it takes. We want and need a diverse mix of individuals to ensure we have the best astronaut corps possible. They don’t do things halfway — they don’t just play the flute. They play in an orchestra."
