In what sounds like the plot outline of Home Alone 11, two families ended up on the wrong flight, headed over 2,000 miles away from their actual destination.

Ryanair staff at East Midlands Airport will have a few questions to answer after two families who were headed to Spain ended up on a flight to Latvia instead. According to Newstalk, their boarding passes were checked several times before they got on the plane, but no one managed to notice that they were boarding the wrong flight.

Luckily, the mistake was realised when the real occupants of their seats arrived, and boarding passes were checked again, at which point they got off the plane and tried to make a dash for their own flight. However, they were too late to make their original journey to Spain, and had to travel to Birmingham to catch the next one, which was ten hours later.

Ryanair said in a statement that although it's the customer's responsibility to ensure that they board the right aircraft, they would be running checks to find out how the incident occurred. They also offered their apologies to the passengers, transferred them on to the next flight for free, gave them refreshments vouchers and will reimburse their travel costs to Birmingham airport.
