There's a tendency around the Oscars to go a little overboard with the jokes, some bordering on downright offensive, many of which just aren't remotely funny. One such instance - and not even Oscar host Seth MacFarlane went quite this far - would be satirical website The Onion calling 9 year old Beasts of The Southern Wild actress Quvenzhané Wallis a 'c**t'. Yes, you read that right.
The fantastic little actress who moved many a viewer to tears for her performance in the Oscar nominated film arrived on the red carpet looking a right little princess in a pretty blue dress with her puppy dog purse in hand. And while many of us were tittering away on Twitter commenting on the highs and lows on the red carpet, The Onion - for some incredulous reason - chose to target Miss Wallis.
They actually had the nerve to tweet: "Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c**t, right?" before someone (no doubt higher up the food chain) copped on to how unwarranted and outrageous this was to say and deleted it.
As you can imagine, this sparked a barrage of angry tweets demanding that the author of the tweet be fired while other tweeters attempted a boycott of The Onion, encouraging twitter users to unfollow the publication.
MacFarlane did 'cause some upset relating to Quvenzhané, when he said:"To give you an idea of how young [Wallis] is, it'll be 16 years before she's too young for Clooney." Eeek.
If there's to be one rule of thumb when tweeting or presenting one of the most watched awards ceremony of the year, just avoid the young'uns. If you choose not to, then accept the inevitable wrath that'll no doubt come your way.
