The season of dinners and parties is upon us. While you’ve probably already had some social gatherings at this stage, there’s still another three to four weeks to go, which means plenty more parties ahead.

It’s important to make sure you’re prepared ahead of each night to make sure you get home from every occasion happily and safely, ready to go for the next one.

With that in mind, here are some of our tips for the season:

1. Plan how you’re getting home before you head out

Whether your friend is the designated driver or you’ve decided to get a taxi home, make sure you’ve planned how you’re getting home before you go out on the town, and also know who you’re going home with. It will get you home safely and without delay when you’ve called it a night.

2. Never ever drink and drive

Just one drink can impair a person’s driving, and fatalities related to drink driving are on the rise. Additionally, never accept a lift from someone who you think or know is drink driving, even your friend. Get a cab home together – it’s just not worth the risk.

3. Take care of yourself and of your friends

If you're drinking, make sure you eat before you go out, pace yourself, and avoid rounds and drinking games which make you drink too much too fast. Avoid wandering or going to unfamiliar places on your own and don’t let your friends wander off by themselves either.

4. Know your late night public transport options

They’ll save you time and money, the latter being particularly handy for party season. To save you some hassle, we’ve provided links to that very information here. You’re welcome.

5. If all else fails, get a taxi

If at all possible, avoid walking home – it’s safer to take a cab. While Hailo can be a lifesaver, it’s also worth keeping the number of a reliable taxi driver on hand. After all, getting a taxi on these late nights during the height of the season can take forever. It’s also worth having an idea of when you are going home so you can book a taxi in advance and save you queueing and standing around in the cold.
