Who said misogyny is dead?
It's certainly not the case with regards to the recruitment of air hostesses in China anyways.
The Oriental Beauty pageant is used as a talent pool from which airlines recruit air hostesses. The pageant, run by modelling agency, Oriental Beauty, does offer the top prize of an actual modelling contract but for most entrants the prospect of gaining a place in an airline training school is the more realistic goal.
The criteria for entry are pretty exact. Candidates must be at least five foot six in height, although for those with exceptional looks, this can be dropped to five foot five. They must also be “elegant, slim, have sweet voice and have no scars in the exposed part of their skin”.
On top of the exacting physical requirements, candidates also need to recent graduates.
Needless to say, this event has its critics and here's hoping it will become a thing of the past sooner rather than later as events like these do no favours to the perception of the airline industry.
