When the world of emoji was last updated to be more diverse, there was one group that felt that they were still being excluded from the fun: gingers.
The uproar was such that a petition started online, and garnered over 14,000 signatures appealing for the redheads to get some recognition and be included.
Swyft Media spotted that petition and thanks to their new app, there's now a whole ginger emoji keyboard so that the redheads of the world can finally express their emotions in the same way everyone else can: with a little cartoon thing that is apparently better somehow.
Speaking about the creation of the app, Swyft Media's Evan Wray said "basically everyone else is represented from the hair color spectrum, but gingers were inexplicably left out", and it was important to represent them as "[emoji is] the evolution of current language."
The app, which can be downloaded for free from Google Play or the App Store, is obviously a welcome addition to help to diversify the world of emoji even further, a post on the blog for the petition outlined that the app is separate and comes off the back of their movement, so it's not real emoji that you can use as you would in the same way as all the others.
Writing in the post, the user who started the petition and goes by the name Ginger Parrot said that "the whole point of this petition is about INCLUSION. Redheads should be included in Apple’s emoji keyboard because it’s right; we shouldn’t have to make an effort to fit in and create our own awkward keyboard to prove our existence".
Keep fighting the good fight we say. Don't let the man keep you down.
