The most read English Wikipedia articles of 2017 have been unveiled and the influence of pop culture as well as current affairs is pretty evident.
The article to come out on top was slightly morbid in tone but in keeping with contemporary times – Deaths in 2017 was viewed 37,387,010 times. In second and third place were two of the world’s most famous and influential (for very, very different reasons, of course) figures – Donald Trump and Elizabeth II were viewed 29,644,764 and 19,290,956 times respectively.
Speaking of regal figures, Meghan Markle in fifth place with 16,944,130 views and Queen Victoria in thirteenth place with 14,164,451 views also proved hugely popular.
In relation to TV, it shouldn’t come as too big a surprise that GOT-related articles took two places in the top 25 (Game of Thrones (season 7) was the fourth most viewed article and Game of Thrones was the sixth) while Netflix series also scored highly with 13 Reasons Why generating 14,934,202 views, Riverdale (2017 TV series) generating 13,360,398 and Stranger Things generating 13,132,129.
A lot of people turned to Wikipedia, unsurprisingly, to learn more about their favourite films and film stars. The most viewed movie-related article was It (2017 film) while Gal Gadot, Logan (film), 2017 in film, Wonder Woman (2017 film), Dwayne Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Justice League (film) also took places in the top 25.
Articles on the subject of Bollywood, such as List of Bollywood films of 2017, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and List of highest-grossing Indian films also scored highly.
