The Church of Scientology could be getting a powerful pal in the US Senate, as Republican Congressman David Jolly is running for election in Florida.

Jolly's district includes Clearwater, the home of the much maligned Flag Service Organization, and as well as being the largest Scientologist church in the world, it also serves as the church's 'spiritual headquarters'.

With the Clearwater district stretching out in a nine-mile grid, his alliance with the religion has served him well on a local level, but could be seen as a hindrance when it comes to his campaign in a state-wide election.

According the The Daily Beast, Jolly, who is not himself a member of the church, has "received numerous donations from the now infamous Scientologist doctor David Minkoff, attended rallies and fundraisers thrown by the church, and steadfastly refuses to distance himself from the group".

Jolly, now the frontrunner for the GOP Senate nomination in Florida, was the "guest of honour" at the church's concert celebrating the centennial of Clearwater, while his wife was set to be a model for a Scientology-run charity fashion show, before pulling out.
