Note we said "were", so he was speaking specifically about when they first auditioned - i.e. when Brian McFadden was in the band. Appearing on last night's Jay Leno show he said: "I said to the manager at the time, 'Forget it'. And then he re-auditioned and one of the ugly ones dyed his hair blonde for the second time I saw them and he got back into the group. I didn't recognise him but it all worked out fine and they sold about 50 million albums."
It had to be Brian, surely it couldn't have been Kian or Nicky?
Anyway, has Heatworld points out this morning, Cowell's recent claim is in stark contrast to how he described his first encounter with Westlife when interviewed for a documentary when they split in 2011. During that interview he said: "Normally in those situations you act a bit cool but Louis was sitting next to me and 30 seconds in I said, Louis we’re in. I wanted them in the studio as quickly as possible. I was in kind of a hurry to get the first record out. I wanted the public to see what I had seen as quickly as possible."
