Serial season 1 subject, Adnan Syed, is returning to court today for a hearing to argue his innocence.

Syed was convicted of the murder of his former high school girlfriend Hae Min Lee in Baltimore in 1999. Syed pleaded not guilty to the crime and has professed his innocence ever since. In 2014 he became the focus of Sarah Koenig's insanely popular podcast Serial as they attempted to solve the case once and for all.

New evidence uncovered as a result of the podcast has prompted this hearing and Syed and his supporters will be hoping that this may lead to him getting a new trial.

The hearing is expected to last three days and will determine whether Adnan's conviction will be overturned and his case retried. His defense team are hoping to introduce an alibi witness who was not presented in his original trial, Asia McCalin. She's a former classmate of Adnan's who said she spotted him at the school library at the time the prosecution say Hae Lee was murdered.

The defense team is also hoping to prove that the cell tower data which was key to the prosecution's case against Adnan was inaccurate and should never have been entered as evidence.
