Thanks to celebrities, Instagram and the iPhone, 'selfie' is officially the word of 2013, having beaten 'twerk' and 'binge-watch' to the top of the Oxford Dictionaries list and risen in usage by 17,000% this year.

The definition of 'selfie' now stands as 'a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website'.  And in case you live under a rock and need an example, just look at the works of Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus and basically every other celeb out there.

According to the Oxford Dictionary people, 'selfie' is of Australian origin, having first appeared on a forum post in September 2002 when user 'Hopey' was showing off his war wounds from boozing too hard.

Um, drunk at a mates 21st, I tripped ofer [sic] and landed lip first (with front teeth coming a very close second) on a set of steps. I had a hole about 1cm long right through my bottom lip. And sorry about the focus, it was a selfie.

Super cute, no?
