Everyone loves a throwback, so sure, why the hell not?

As you all presumably know (sure why would you be reading an article about the Eurovision unless you follow it?), last night, Ireland’s Eurovision song contest entry – Brendan Murray singing ‘Dying to Try’ – failed to qualify for the finals of the Eurovision contest, which airs tomorrow night.

In spite of winning more times than any other country (seven, that is), Ireland hasn’t had a win since 1996 and hasn’t made it to the finals since 2013.

Jennifer Gannon of the Irish Times suggested that the issue may have been that ‘Dying to Try’ was “just too monochrome and weedy in the face of the technicolour madness of euro-yodelling from Romania, folk house bangers from Belarus and Hungary and the spectacle of the night that came from Croatia.”

She points out the success of Jedward, who represented Ireland twice in 2011 and 2012, and suggests Samantha Mumba rep us next, calling her “a bone fide pop star whose surname almost sounds like ABBA which is obviously a sign that this is our destiny. Mumba for Eurovision 2018. You know it makes sense.”

Samantha, who is known for 90s-00s hits like ‘Gotta Tell You’, ‘Body II Body’, ‘Baby Come on Over’ and ‘Always Come Back To Your Love’, is all up for it:

And the Twitterverse seem happy too:
