English actor Julian Sands has been reported missing after going on a hike in California.
Sands is best known for roles in 'A Room with a View', 'Arachnophobia', 'The Killing Fields' and more, and has been based in the US since 2020.
The 65-year-old went hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains and was reported missing last Friday evening. A search ensued but had to be called off on Saturday, due to avalanche risks and poor conditions due to snow and ice. California has been hit with numerous bad storms over the last few weeks, leading President Joe Biden to issue a disaster declaration.
Searches have continued throughout the week via drone and helicopter, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, but ground searches cannot continue until it's safe to do so. They named Sands as the missing person yesterday.
"It’s extremely dangerous, and experienced hikers are having a hard time getting through there," said a spokesman for the sherriff's department.
Sands is reportedly an experienced hiker who had spoken about his love for mountaineering in previous interviews, telling The Guardian in 2020 that his happiest place was "Close to a mountain summit on a glorious cold morning."
His most recent film role was in 2021's 'Benediction', with Peter Capaldi and Jack Lowden. He lives in North Hollywood with his wife and three children.
