Shane MacGowan has been bestowed with a new sparkling set of gnashers after years of being famed for his unsightly smile.

The Pogues frontman's (pictured above in 2005) transformation - which was documented in a Sky Arts documentary that aired last night - was undertaken by Irish dental surgeon Darragh Mulrooney, who fitted 28 dentures and one gold tooth into the singer's mouth after he was impressed by dental work that his girlfriend had undergone.

Mulrooney, who described the surgery as 'the Everest of dentistry' said that it may change the way that MacGowan sings, however. "Shane recorded most of his great works when he had some teeth to work with," he said. "The question on everyone’s lips is how it will affect his voice. The tongue is a finely attuned muscle and it makes precise movements. We’ve effectively retuned his instrument and that will be an ongoing process.”
