Every year, comedian Katherine Ryan (@Kathbum) receives a heavily edited birthday card from her pop.

As she explains, her father goes through the trouble of “cross[ing] out the passages that he doesn't feel apply to [her]” because what’s family for if not for being brutally honest?

Particularly brutal is the crossed out passage “I love the heart of you… the genuine compassion, empathy and friendship you offer to everyone you know.”
