Disney has been non-stop making live-action remakes of some of its classics for years now. From 'The Lion King' to 'The Jungle Book' and 'Beauty and the Beast', the nostalgia wheel keeps turning.
Disney's next focus is now on remaking the old classic 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'.
However, as pointed out by Peter Dinklage on his appearance on Marc Maron's 'WTF' podcast, some remakes could potentially have some slightly more problematic elements to them than others.
Recently it was announced that 'West Side Story' star Rachel Zegler had been cast as the new Snow White. Disney received a lot of praise for their diverse casting. But another part of the 'Snow White' story may be harder to put a progressive spin on.
"I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. You’re still telling the story of 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.' Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me," said the 'Cyrano' star.
"You’re progressive in one way and you’re still making that fucking backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the fuck are you doing man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough."
While Dinklage didn't suggest that the movie should be shelved, he did say that it needs to be handled in the right way.
"If you tell the story of 'Snow White' with the most fucked up, cool, or progressive spin on it? Let's do it," he said. "All in."
It is still unclear how Disney will portray the seven dwarfs in the upcoming film. Surely a lot of thought will have to go in to its execution, seeing as moral standards have rightfully progressed in the 85 years since the films initial release.
