When it comes to style icons, there are few men more universally known to be well dressed than James Bond himself.
Despite being not your typical Bond-type when he was first cast, Daniel Craig has undoubtedly made the character his own, thanks in no small part to the fact that he pulls off a suit incredibly well. And as production is about to kick off on the latest Bond with Craig back in 007's shoes, shirt and tie, a proper suit is an essential part of any man's wardrobe.
Of course, with Autumn and Winter headed our way, meaning we need to switch to warmer clothes, as well as the obligatory Christmas parties coming down the line, there’s no better time to get yourself a slick suit that will steal the show when you unveil it next.
If you wear a suit day to day in work, then we don’t need to tell you that your budget should be spent on quality, not quantity, while if your workplace is more casual, then you still need to make sure that your wardrobe contains at least one all-purpose suit, be it for a job interview or a wedding.
However, getting the best doesn’t mean you have to break the bank either. While Bond can charge Her Majesty’s Secret Service for expenses on his suits, you can get a look that’s just as cool without needing a royal budget. We sent our editor Mike Sheridan down to Arnotts Dublin to get suited, booted, and shaken but not stirred, so that he could pull off the Daniel Craig look.
The suit we picked out for him to match up to the Craig outfit was from Strellson, who make a range of sleek suits that will give your look an unquestionably modern feel. The standard notch lapels give this suit a classic feel too, while the slim cut ensures that you won’t look out of place from the boardroom to the ballroom.
You can mix and match the jackets (€279) with trousers (€110) , which allows you to make some offbeat combinations if you like, but most importantly offers you the chance to mix up your look regularly without over-stretching your budget.
A classic, crisp blue shirt from Calvin Klein (€69) will match well with the grey, as white can make it seem very formal. Colouring is an important consideration for most Irish men, and sticking to a palette of grey and blue shades will do wonders for most of us, rather than stark contrasts like black and white. As a fair-haired man himself, this is something that Daniel Craig knows well, and he also sticks to those colours when choosing his suits, something which is very evident in his style evolution since taking on the role of James Bond.
Adding a personal touch is achieved through your choice of tie and pocket square (€26), the latter being something that is often ignored, but do so at your peril. When done well, it will add a dash of colour to the suit, draw the eye, and is something that Bond himself would never leave the house without, so be prepared for the compliments to come rolling in. It shows that you've paid attention to what you're wearing, as well as making you seem at home in a suit even if you're not used to wearing one, which also makes an important first impression.
The final step is the footwear, which you should try and match with your belt. This is where grey proves again that it's your friend, as you can match it with black, as these leather Ted Bakers (€150) prove, or brown, so you can once again bring some versatility to the same outfit without too much hassle.
