With a fresh new judging panel and a host of weird, wonderful and downright aggro contestants, the X Factor came back with quite the unprecedented bang on Saturday night. Despite breaking the hearts of Cheryl fans the world over, (and maybe a few Danni ones too) the new series is already a ratings success with a peak of 12.6 million viewers tuning in to the first show to see if these 'young and relevant' judges are worth their salt.

Cast aside Tulisa's annoying attempt at reinforcing that she's 'young and feisty' - "I worked my way up from Camden yea, and that's why I'm here now yea"; Kelly's all American 'praise the Lord!' and 'oh momma' commentary and Gazza's doleful voice (although, bit of a hottie don't we think?) - they're really not a bad bunch. And God bless Louis, no matter how many series' he returns for, no matter how many times he tells someone they've got 'the whole package' (get a new line for jaysus sake!), he just can't contain his excitement when shouting 'YES' at those en route to boot camp. As a panel, they've got experience and for now they've got chemistry, but no doubt it won't be long before Louis storms off stage and Tulisa yanks on Kelly's ironed-to-fook 'huhr'. Fingers crossed!

So new judges, yes, but an all new X Factor? No. For this first episode, we hit up London where a whole raft of cocky teenagers, mutton-dressed-as-lamb-esque housewives and loopers let out on day release all vie to be told they have that all important 'star quality'.

Highlights for me were Frankie Cocozza, the token cocky little sh*t who'll no doubt have girls ringing their knickers from Brighton to Bangor with hopes of their names being engraved on his arse. (In case you didn't watch it, Frankie has seven, yes SEVEN girls tattooed on his bum. One for each girl he snogged on holidays. Bless) This year's Harry Styles (One Direction), he had fun with the judges but aside from that he can actually sing. Refreshing.

Then there was Goldie Cheung. Fancying herself as Asia's answer to Tina Turner, poor Goldie, 50, got so overwhelmed before going on; she almost spewed in Dermot's face...
