Although it's been quite a while since they worked together on Baz Luhrmann's 2008 film 'Australia', it seems that Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman operate by the 'Hollywood Aussies stick together' rule.
Kidman was in the audience of 'The Music Man' Broadway show, which stars Jackman, on Saturday night when a charity auction for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS was being held. The cast has been holding auctions at the end of shows to raise money for both charities.
When a hat signed by Jackman was up for grabs, the actress shouted a bid of $100k from her seat - which led to her receiving a standing ovation for her generous donation.
“I love you. I love Broadway. And I love what they do, Broadway Cares, but I also want to say this show is extraordinary," she said after approaching the stage to collect her newly-purchased hat.
Jackman, meanwhile, added: "I’ve known Nic for almost 30 years. I’ve worked with her. I can tell you this is not a surprise to me. She is one of the most generous souls I know. You’re a beautiful person. I love you. Thank you.”
The cast of the show - which has been the biggest hit on Broadway this year, and is set to close in January 2023 - have been raising funds for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS at the end of recent performances, and the director of the former charity said "Broadway Cares is blessed with friends across Broadway. But we have no greater champion than Hugh Jackman. This extraordinary gift from his pal Nicole Kidman is by far the largest donation for any one auction item ever. That’s 20,000 meals and 2,000 doctor visits this holiday season for those living with HIV/AIDS, struggling with COVID-19 or facing other life-threatening challenges. Donations made at The Music Man, all across Broadway, Off-Broadway and at national touring productions will provide meals and medication, health care and hope this holiday season."
