Fans of 2014's biggest podcast will be pulled right back into the case of Adnan Syed and the murder of Hae Min Lee today as Syed is set to be retried by the State of Maryland.
News broke late last night that Syed's petition to have a new trial had been granted by a judge in Baltimore, Maryland, with Buzzfeed's Brandon Wall reporting on the decision as it came through.
Judge Martin Welch denied Syed and his counsel's claims that his first lawyer, Cristina Gutierrez, had proven ineffective when she failed to contact Asia McClain Chapman as an alibi, and also disagreed with claims the prosecution breached their duty by withholding exculpatory evidence.
He did, however, agree that Syed's attorney should have cross-examined the state's 'expert witness' on cell tower data and its reliability, and granted a retrial, vacating the conviction.
