The controversial and mysterious Banksy is known for creating unusual and provocative artwork around the world, all of which is done with his / her unique flair and a taste for the dramatic.
For example, Banksy created an art gallery called the Walled Off Hotel in Palestine last year and had several graffiti pieces around Calais, the so-called "jungle" where Syrian migrants live as they attempt to enter the United Kingdom.
His latest piece, however, is quite different. At Sotheby's yesterday evening, Banksy auctioned off a print of 'Girl With Balloon', a piece from 2006 and arguably one of his most recognisable works. The print was sold for $1.2 million and right after the gavel was hit, a remote alarm attached to the frame of the piece sounded - and the print was slowly cut to ribbons in a shredder hidden in the frame.
Here's the moment as it happened.
$1,300,000 BANKSY artwork piece just “self-destructed” right after it was sold at Sotheby’s auction!🤯😳

Needless to say, the scene immediately went viral around Twitter and the question now is whether or not Sotheby's issues a refund to the buyer. In a statement released to the Financial Times, Sotheby's said that they "have talked with the successful purchaser who was surprised by the story. We are in discussion about next steps."
