In fairness, the idea sounds good on paper - but there's just no way it's a feasible model.
A bar in New Zealand, purported to be Auckland's first 'dry bar', has shut down within a few short weeks of opening because - surprise, surprise - nobody turned up.
The bar, known as TAP, was opened in response to Auckland's restriction on pub opening hours and, as the owner said, to combat the licensing laws in Auckland.
"We gave it a shot and Auckland drinking culture just didn’t tie in with the dry bar," owner Grady Elliott explained in a recent interview. "No one showed up."
As Grady explains it, anyone who did turn up ended drinking tap water instead of ordering drinks. That's not surprising, considering non-alcoholic drinks in TAP went for around €8 or NZ$15 a pop.
Despite the spectacular failure of the venture, however, Grady's not finished. He's reopening the bar in the next few months as a regular bar that serves alcohol.
If only he'd done that in the first place...
