Ten years on from the devastating tsunami that hit Indonesia, a girl who was swept away by the waves has been reunited with her family.
In one of the most unbelievable stories that we can remember, a 14-year-old girl named Raudhatul Jannah was reunited with her family, ten years after she had gone missing in the aftermath of the huge tsunami that hit Sumatra.
At the time, the girl was just four-years-old, and her family searched for her for over a month before giving up hope and accepting that the worst had more than likely transpired. However, in June, their son and Raudhatul's brother said that he spotted a girl who looked very similar to her on the way to school and her mother travelled to the Aceh Barat Daya district (a different area to where they live) to investigate.
Against all odds, it seems that her son had been right and the family were reunited. Apparently she had been washed out to Banyak island, about 40km off the coast, and was found by a local fisherman who brought her home.
The family is said to be overjoyed at the improbable occurrence, and speaking to AFP her mother Jamaliah said "I am so grateful to God for reuniting us with our child after 10 years of being separated. My heart beat so fast when I saw her. I hugged her and she hugged me back and felt so comfortable in my arms.”
Jamaliah also stated that she is willing to undergo DNA tests to prove that the girl is in fact her daughter, but for now the family are just happy to be back together. They have also stated that they will travel to Banyak island to search for their other son, whose whereabouts still remain unknown after the tsunami.
