32-year-old Kevin McGee, who married Lucas in 2006, was found hanging in his apartment by police officers who were alerted to his possibly suicide by his last post on Facebook. It read: "Kevin McGee thinks death is much better than life." To which someone responded "That's a bit dark, Kev."
The Sun reports: "Last night Lucas, 35, was described as 'utterly destroyed' by his former love's suicide - just three years after the couple threw a spectacular 'panto' party to celebrate their civil partnership. A friend of the pair, whose split was the first celebrity gay divorce after same-sex marriage became legal, said: 'Matt was floored when he heard the news. He always loved Kevin despite their differences and their difficult marriage.' Little Britain star Lucas - who returned to BBC2 this summer in spoof game show Shooting Stars - dumped McGee over his drug-taking... Another friend said: 'Kevin found it really difficult to deal with Matt's fame. Being thrust into the world of A-list parties and free booze and drugs was hard. Matt is a pretty down to earth guy and never touches drugs. Cracks started to show in the marriage because as much as Matt loved Kevin he couldn't deal with his behaviour... They had awful rows. In the end Matt just said he couldn't deal with it any more'."
Social networking sites have become the place to leave suicide notes, it would seem. It's frightening, but hopefully it will encourage people to open to someone - be it to a friend, family, a professional, or someone at the end of the phone - so painful situations such as this don't become more commonplace.
