The public are about to be given the opportunity to name storms in Ireland and the UK, and that just sounds like a bad idea.
Met Eireann and the Met Office in the UK are joining forces this Autumn and Winter to give the public the chance to name upcoming storms by sending suggestions via Twitter, Facebook, and e-mail.
The idea behind the new system is to make people more aware of dangerous weather, thus improving public safety, which makes perfect sense. We just hope it'll be worth all the hassle that'll flood in through the #NameOurStorms tweets.
The suggestions will eventually be whittled down and put on a list, with the terms chosen being used in alphabetical order, excluding names of famous storms that have gone before, like Wilma or Katrina. We assume they'll try their best to keep out the suggestions those who tend to take these things as a joke will fire at them. Yes, we're looking at you, clever Twitter people.
