Walter De Gregorio was invariably thinking at the time, "Meh, f*ck it, it's funny." And he'd be right.
In case you hand't heard the joke, De Gregorio was speaking on Swiss Television earlier in the week when he decided to quip: “The Fifa president, secretary general and communications director are in a car. Who’s driving? The police."
Badabum badabing.
As Fifa's Head of Communication, De Gregorio has been through a particularly strenuous time in light of all the FIFA arrests and the (alleged) stepping down of Sepp Blatter (although he's yet to actually stand down. He's still currently at the helm) and perhaps he just had a case of tourettes after having to say stuff like "This for Fifa is good. It is not good in terms of image or reputation but in terms of cleaning up, this is good. The process goes on and we are looking forward" for the last couple of weeks.
In a statement released by someone else related to communications in Fifa: "Walter De Gregorio has decided to relinquish his office with immediate effect as director of communications and public affairs. Mr De Gregorio joined Fifa on 14 September 2011 and will serve Fifa on a consultancy basis until the end of this year. His deputy Nicolas Maingot will resume the role ad interim... Walter has worked incredibly hard for the past four years and we are immensely grateful for all he has done. I am glad we will be able to continue to draw on his expertise until the end of the year."
