When the wrong Best Picture winner was announced at the 2017 Oscars last February, it was one of the most embarrassing moments that the Academy Awards had had in years.
While it was Warren Beatty who opened the card, Faye Dunaway was the one who read it after she saw Beatty was stalling reading it out.
Faye recently spoke with NBC Nightly News about what happened that night from her side of the story, and explained that she thought Beatty was ‘joking’ when he didn’t read the card: "I mean, I thought he was stalling — Warren's like that. . He kind of holds the power and makes you wait … but it’s part of his charm."
Dunaway said she did not notice Emma Stone's name on the card before reading it out and admitted feeling "completely stunned" when she realised her error. She said she feels guilty about what happened and wonders whether she could have prevented the debacle.
"I could have done something, surely. Why didn't I see Emma Stone's name on the top of the card?" she said.
When asked if she felt "stung" by the incident, Dunaway said: "Yeah, completely. And we were, I won't say 'deer in the headlight', but you are completely stunned. You don't know what has happened."
Beatty and Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel similarly described the moment onstage as ‘chaos.’
