It's like the plot of Homeward Bound, but there were no dogs and it took a hell of a lot longer.
A family in South Carolina had given up hope that they would ever see theri tabby cat Kevin again, when unexpectedly they got a call from Southern California to say that he had been found, alive and well, over 2,000 miles away. Here's a quick Google maps version of what that route looks like:
It seems that Kevin had been an indoor cat, according to his owner Cheryl Walls, but he had been acting unhappily so she started to let him roam around outside, until one day he didn't come back. That was back in 2013, and Walls assumed that she wouldn't be seeing Kevin again.
However, it turns out that he had hitched a ride in a U-Haul trailer from someone who was driving across the country, and was discovered when an inspector heard meowing during a routine stop on the border with Arizona.
Kevin was a bit dehydrated but overall was in good condition, and when the folks at Riverside County Animal Services scanned his microchip, they were able to contact Wells and let her know Kevin would be headed home.
