By now you've probably installed and uninstalled Facebook Messenger a few times, and you might not be alone.

According to what Facebook announced yesterday, there are a huge number of people using Facebook Messenger after it became a standalone app a few months back, a rather impressive 500 million people.

That's despite all the negative press it received and the fact that people were outraged over the number of permissions that they had to hand over to use it, but when compared to the number of people using Facebook mobile itself (over 1.12 billion every month), they still have a bit of catching up to do.

Peter Martinazzi, Director of Product Management, recognised that in the announcement, but was still noting that it's a big moment for the company: "this is an exciting milestone but with a half billion people relying on Messenger to communicate and connect, it is also a reminder that there is so much left for us to do".
