So you know the way David Beckham is only one of the world's greatest footballers? (Some of you may dispute me on that but you know what I mean.) Well turns out, he didn't grow up wanting to rule the pitch; when he was a tot, he aspired to be a soldier. Having visited the troops in Afghanistan, it's worth wondering: had Beckham chosen to ignore his skills with the ball, would he have been out there in combat alongside the likes of Mr Birthday-Suit-Extraordinaire Prince Harry?

In an interview with The Daily Star, the Paris Saint Germain midfielder explained his original plans: "I actually wanted to be a soldier, so I used to march around the house and roll around in mud. I built a den in my bedroom with friends... We used to pretend we were soldiers and that we were in the Army, which was what I wanted to be when I was a kid."

Reminiscing on the days when his face was covered in chocolate, Becks said: "My favourite toy as a kid was Thomas The Tank Engine. One of my sons absolutely loves Thomas The Tank as well, so it's carried over... But obviously, my favourite bit of equipment was the football. From waking up in the morning, and going to school I used to carry the football. I think I actually slept with the football a few times."

Must have knocked your head off it a few times in the bed so. Ah we're just kidding, though he doesn't articulate himself as the sharpest tool in the box, we're big fans of Beckham in here; he seems a genuinely decent guy, he's done quite a lot for charity and what's more, he looks swell in a pair of undies.
