The iconic Poolbeg Chimneys look set to remain part of the skyline in Dublin after a campaign to keep them gathered support online.
Last summer, the ESB indicated that it was looking at demolishing the facility at Poolbeg as the maintenance and upkeep on it and the famous chimneys was not the best use of their limited resources, but it seems that a campaign lobbying them to reconsider has been successful.
In a press release today, the ESB stated that the chimneys "are a well-known landmark in the Dublin skyline" and that after carrying out a structural assessment "early indicators suggest that there are no significant structural issues", so the chimneys can stay.
However, there will need to be some work done to get them up to scratch to be kept, but in the wake of the announcement that they could be knocked down, there were a number of plans for turning them into a tourist attraction of some description, including making them into a skybridge. However, there is still an operational power station there at Poolbeg, so these plans look like they won't be happening just yet.
The maintenance work on the first of the two chimneys looks set to start as early as next week in conjunction with Dublin City Council, with work on the second chimney beginning in the autumn.
