You couldn't make this sort of thing up.
A man wound up in Derry Magistrates Court yesterday after smashing a window in a bar and causing £500 worth of damage, all because he was 'spooked by his own reflection' and headbutted it.
According to Derry Now, Gerard McGaughey was in a city centre bar on May 2nd and was drunk when the incident occurred. Unfortunately Mr. McGaughey couldn't remember the incident. Fortunately for us, the 'whole sorry incident' was caught on CCTV cameras.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley told the court: "The prosecution suggest he turned around and was almost spooked by his own reflection in the door. If the prosecution theory is correct, he may be fortunate that he is not charged with attempted assault."
Mr. McGaughey pleaded guilty to charges of criminal damage and was ordered to pay £548.40 compensation to the bar and was also given a two year conditional discharge.
