Several months back, the sad news that Christy Dignam was receiving palliative care at his Dublin home was revealed by his family.

There was a subsequent outpouring of love and support for the Aslan frontman by fans, his peers and well-wishers.

This morning, however, we got to hear from the man himself after his final interview with Ryan Tubridy - which was conducted last week at his Dublin home - was broadcast on Tubridy's RTE Radio 1 show.

Needless to say, the interview was a highly emotional affair as Christy discussed a multitude of topics as he nears the end of his life, which he described as "being on a conveyer belt to heaven."

The 62-year-old discussed his love for his family, including his wife Kathryn. He said "I have made loads of dodgy decisions in my life, y'know. Loads of mistakes, I've made. I don’t regret them because I am happy where I'm at now, y'know… but one decision was I feel I won the Lotto when I kind of met Kathryn, y'know."

He also said that he would like his daughter Kiera to continue his legacy, "because if there is anyone on Earth that has a right to sing those songs, it would be her."

Of his funeral, he said that he wants a no-fuss affair, similar to that of David Bowie's: "I would rather just die," he said. "David Bowie’s was the best funeral ever, you know. You just die and get cremated and that’s it. Nobody knew where it was, who it was, d'you know what I mean? He was just gone and that’s it - just a little puff of smoke. That’s the way I would like it."

He added that he was happy, but admitted that he also had moments of being sad and scared, and that he would like "another ten years", having lived with his diagnosis now for a full decade. "Y'know, the thing about this diagnosis - anybody with cancer, actually - that’s why I used to love listening to Vicki Phelan. Because when you do get into a particular emotion, you get into it. You know what I mean? You don’t do it by halves, d'you know what I mean? Because everything is so serious. There’s no time for bullshit."

The interview generated a big reaction on social media, some of which you can see below.
