Back in the day, sending a letter to Santa involved rushing down to the post office the week you got off Christmas with a carefully-scrawled letter addressed to one Santa Claus, North Pole, Lapland.
Of course, people are sending Santa e-mails now and leaving him messages on Facebook because of the new modern technology and whatnot. But back in the simpler times, 'twas all done by letter.
Lewis Shaw, a builder working in Reading, found a letter to Santa stuffed up a chimney whilst he was carrying out demolition works on the house. The letter, written by someone named David, asked for a "a Rupert annual, and a drum box of chalks, soldiers and Indians, slippers and any little toys you have to spare."
Which is just adorable. Shaw then decided to reunite the letter with its writer and stuck it up on Facebook where, eventually, David Haylock came forward.
David, now 78, says he can "remember bending down with my mother and putting it up the chimney, and waiting for the draught to take it up," which is also stupidly adorable.
To top it all off, Shaw decided to gather up the presents that David asked for as well, but said they wouldn't open them until Christmas Day.
